How it started
Hello, my name is Phil Broom. I'm a UK based Lighting Cameraman/DOP who has worked in the TV industry for over 25 years.
I work mainly within the Broadcast sector and have gained a reputation as a 'safe pair of hands'. Production Companies need to have the reassurance that when they employ a DOP they will come back with not only a happy Director but, more importantly, a programme!
I designed and made the BeamSplitter range of devices, starting with the Eyeline 45 (the alternative to the EyeDirect and Interratron). I next turned my hand to an alternative to the AutoQue/ Portaprompt device and produced the Q45. Finally I realised I could combine the two and designed the EyeQ 45.
I sort of fell into making the BeamSplitter range of devices out of necessity. I was employed to do a shoot in the US as a one-man band. The Director was very keen to film all the interviews with the EyeDirect/Interrotron so the contributor would look straight into the camera lens. Having used the EyeDirect before I was aware it came in a rather heavy case and was a bit of a fiddle to rig. With that in mind I decided I would make my own lightweight portable solution. After several attempts with wood and metal I soon realised the future was lightweight Correx, similar to that used on KinoFlo lighting. This versatile material is lightweight, robust and adaptable so was the perfect solution.
Once I had found the Correx the next thing was the glass, which proved to be a bit trickier than I thought and more expensive. To get good reflections you need specialised Beamspitter 60:40 reflective glass. After a lot of searching I found a supply and the rest, they say, is history.
